Marché Publics is a series of community markets where farmers and suppliers sell their crops and products to customers. With four locations across Montréal, the market has become a hub for offering a variety of food, from fresh vegetables to sweet snacks.
Marchés Publics partnered with local farmers to package various seeds from their harvest, along with related products. They seek a packaging fit for a collection of herbal seeds and derived honey jars that convey a fresh, dynamic tone, embodying the brand’s artisanal spirit and the voices of the participating farmers and artisans.
The first step was determining what clients want to see and how impactful it would be on the company. Given that the target audience consists mostly of young adults who are garden novices, the design must be playful, contemporary, and informational. This interpretation also provides a dynamic experience, as clients go through an educational phase when planting the seeds.
After many user tests for alternative concepts, a bookshelf package was decided as it embodies educational purposes in a dynamic and rustic style. To give each product a contemporary yet crafty tone, vectorized illustrations were used for each seed type (lavender, echinacea, and peppermint). The colourful geometric style would reflect the bright and fresh atmosphere the marché wishes to invoke. The aligned quilted pattern for each visual resembles a contemporary style of granny squares, giving a sense of artisanal craftwork.
For the honey packaging, a small airtight jar in a box was used, and similar playful geometric illustrations matched the layout and design of the seed packaging.
